Links matter. A lot.cartoon penguin

  • They can make your website…
    And break your website.
  • They can place you on Google’s best pages…
    Or in its bad books.
  • They can earn you hot converting traffic…
    Or a cold Penguin penalty.

So how can you get your website linked in without getting it slapped down?

The answer is surprisingly simple.

You need to forget about all those technical shenanigans for a second, and start thinking of SEO and link building as a marketing exercise rather than a set of tricks.

  • Let me help you create website content that people want to link to.
  • Let me help you promote this content through influencers and social media.
  • Let me help you earn links and see what a lot of difference they can make.

Let’s talk and get started straight away…

…Or read on for my lowdown on what links could mean to your site and how you can start getting them today.

“The objective is not to ‘make your links appear natural’.
The objective is that your links are natural.”

link building motto on post it note

The first rule of link building is there are definitely rules.

  • Link farms will produce problems.
  • Paid links could cost you dearly.
  • Article banks just can’t be relied on.
  • Excessive directory links may lead to the wrong sort of enquiries.
  • Indiscriminate guest posting has outstayed its welcome.
  • And so on…

In fact, trying to steer the whole link building process too tightly in any way is likely to see your wheels fall off.

The second rule of link building is that not all links are equal.

  • There’s relevance to consider.
Links from relevant sites help you rank for a range of relevant keywords.
  • There’s referral traffic to think about.
It’s not all about search: links from popular sites will bring a steady stream of traffic by themselves.
  • There’s domain authority to pass on.
Each site has its own level of authority that is related to the number and quality of sites that link to it. A link from a site with little authority doesn’t have a lot to spare. A link from a site with authority passes some on to you. The more authority you have the better your chance of ranking for your search terms.
  • There’s toxicity to avoid like the plague.
In the same way that links from authority sites will do you the world of good, collecting links from ‘spam’ sites will cause you a lot of trouble further down the line.

The third rule of link building is that a natural link is actually a rare thing indeed.

Sorry Mr. Cutts but it’s true!

Google is explicit about its end goal. It wants to create a search environment where the sites that appear on its pages have not been artificially engineered to appear there. It wants to only return results that offer the best user experience for the search entered.

“Google’s mission is to organise the world’s information
and make it universally accessible and useful.”
Google

The initial search engine that was created in 1996 by Google was called BackRub precisely because it used links to determine the importance of individual web pages.

But here’s the rub.

With 5 trillion web pages now indexed a natural link doesn’t come easy – after all, who’d naturally stumble on a page amongst all that?

With Google’s campaign against artificial links content marketing has been thrust centre stage. Link building has evolved from artificial engineering to precision engineering.

Here’s what you need to do to create as ‘natural’ link as there can possibly be:

  • Research the sort of content that people share and link to.
  • Produce the best content available.
  • Find the influencers who can get it out there.
  • Contact the webmasters who may be interested.
  • Promote it online using paid ads and social media.
  • Repurpose it for different audiences and formats.
  • Build on it by creating related content.
  • Rinse and repeat.

There’s way too much tinkering there for the process to be ‘natural’. But, at the same time, it’s a future proofed strategy because it provides (pretty much) what Google wants:

  • Relevant links from authoritative sites
  • Earned by content that is genuinely useful to a specific group of searchers.

“A lot of SEO is now circling back around to good old fashioned marketing. There are lots of different ways to get peoples’ attention and to get traction. And the more creative you are or the better the experience is with your website, the more likely you are to be successful.”
Matt Cutts

Is that all there is to link building?

cartoon manga style asking is that all?

Actually it’s quite a lot of work, but that’s what I’m here to help with. But, no, it’s not all that link building is: it’s just happens to be the bits I really love.

Here are some other ways I can help give your site some back rubs that will get it up front.

  • Broken links can be found, fixed and repaired.
  • Competitive link analysis can be carried out to find where others in your field have secured links and how they did it.
  • Press releases can be leveraged to attract useful links.
  • We can explore ensuring your memberships of trade bodies are paying their way with links back to the site.
  • There’s a whole real world out there so you can look at offering internships, organising conferences or taking part in events to get very useful links indeed. Don’t forget next time you are running in a fun run for charity to put a page up on your site and ask suppliers and customers to link to it.

(This is begining to sound far too easy!)

The thing about links is that once you stop trying to get them the easy way it’s amazing how many innovative and exciting ways there are to get them.
